2 million private cars

In 2005, the number of private cars in Norway exceeded 2 million. Including vans, there are now more than 500 cars per 1 000 inhabitants.

As from 17 November 2006 tables on lorries by carrying capacity and vans and special vehicles for road goods transport were added to the StatBank. The name of the statistics was simultaneously changed from "Registered private cars and vans" to "Registered vehicles".

Stock of private cars, by age

The number of private cars and vans have increased every year since 1996 and was 2 330 850 at the end of 2005. Of these, 2 027 894 were registered as private cars. This is 2.6 per cent more than the year before.

Never before as many as 2 million private cars have been registered. Also the vans exceeded a new boundary in 2005 when more than 300 000 cars of this category were registered. The number of registered vans increased by 6.7 per cent compared with the previous year.

The average age of the stock of private cars has the last five years varied between 10.1 and 10.3 years. The stock of vans is younger. Theyr average age has varied between 7 and 7.3 years. Compared with 2004, the average age fell by 0.1 years for vans while it remained steady for the private cars.

Volkswagen is the most common make for private cars, followed by Toyota. For vans the situation is quite opposite - there are most Toyota vans registered and Volkswagen is second.
