Number of cars continues to grow
At the end of 2009, 53 000 more cars were registered than one year earlier. The private car population expanded by 45 000 cars and the population of vans by 8 000. The number of cars scrapped for refund fell by almost 13 000.
A total of 2 241 119 private cars and 387 546 vans had Norwegian number plates at the end of 2009. The increase was 2 per cent for private cars and 2.2 per cent for vans.
For private cars, Volkswagen was the most popular make, with 303 122 registered cars. Toyota was in second place with 272 605 private cars, slightly catching up with Volkswagen during 2009. For vans, the situation is the opposite. Toyota has 72 847 registered vans, but Volkswagen is right behind with only 140 less.
Older car fleet
The average age of the registered cars has gone up slightly. Private cars had an average age of 10.4 years at the end of 2009, compared with 10.3 a year earlier. For vans, the average age had increased from 6.9 years at the end of 2008 to 7.3 years a year later.
Fewer cars scrapped
During 2009, a total of 94 497 cars were scrapped for refund. Of this, 87 137 were private cars. The number of scrapped private cars fell by 11.8 per cent compared with 2008. All the same time, the average age at the time of scrapping was lower than the year before. The private cars scrapped during 2009 were 18.5 years of age on average, compared with 18.7 years in 2008.
Also for vans there has been a drop in the number of vehicles scrapped for refund. In total, 7 360 vans were scrapped during 2009, compared with 8 601 in 2008. This is a decrease of 14.4 per cent. The average age of the scrapped vans was 14.9 years in 2009 and 15.5 years in 2008.
Four of the most popular private car makes had an average age of 20 years or more at the time of scrapping. These were Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Saab and Toyota. The van makes that had passed 20 years of age were Volvo, Subaru, Isuzu, Mazda, Suzuki and Chevrolet.
