In 2011, almost 108 000 passenger cars and 10 000 vans were scrapped for refund. This was an increase of 19.8 and 23.1 per cent respectively compared to 2010. The average age at the time of scrapping was 19.2 years for private cars and 16.2 years for vans.

At the end of 2011, Norwegian private cars were 10.5 years old on average. For vans, the average age was 7.7 years.

Almost 2.8 million passenger cars and vans

A total of 2.78 million cars were registered in Norway at the end of 2011. Of this, 2.37 million were private cars and almost 411 000 were vans.

Most Volkswagen

For many years Volkswagen has had most private cars in Norway, with Toyota in second place. At the end of 2011, Volkswagen’s share of the total stock of passenger cars constituted 13.9 per cent, compared with Toyota’s 12.4 per cent. For vans, the share was 20.6 and 18.9 per cent respectively.

Scrapping

In evaluating the material of cars scrapped for refund, the market share of the car’s make over time should be taken into consideration. It must also be emphasised that the average age of scrapped vehicles of different makes cannot necessarily be used as an estimate of the age of the corresponding vehicles manufactured today.
