Women travel abroad on holiday
Norwegian women accounted for 56 per cent of all holiday trips to destinations abroad in 2004. The total number of outbound holiday trips was 2.9 million, an increase of almost 13 per cent compared with the 2003 holiday year.
The results for Travel survey for 2004, 2005 and 2006 are revised. Revised figures are put in the Statbank and in the attached tables for each year. The articles are not revised.
In total, Norwegians aged 16-79 went on 5.8 million holiday trips lasting at least four nights in 2004. This is an increase of almost 2.4 per cent compared with the 2003 holiday year.
The entire increase in the number of holiday trips took place among those going on an outbound holiday. The number of trips where Norway was the main destination decreased slightly.
Spain remained the most popular destination abroad with over half a million holiday trips in 2004. Denmark was the second most popular country, followed by Sweden.
The most popular destinations in Norway were Buskerud, Oppland and Hedmark counties, followed by western Norway (Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane og Møre og Romsdal counties).
More trips by air
Private and hired cars were used on 46 per cent of the trips in 2004, and the car remained the most common mode of transport despite a decrease of 8 per cent from 2003. The total number of trips by plane increased by 20 per cent from 2003, and was used on 42 per cent of all trips.
On a typical outbound holiday trip, the majority travelled by plane and stayed in hotels. A typical holiday in Norway involved the use of one's own car and private accommodation.
