Strong increase in diesel prices
The total cost index for road goods transport increased by 1.7 per cent on average from February to March, mainly due to a substantial increase in diesel prices. In the last 12 months the total costs have increased by 5.1 per cent on average.
The recent development in oil prices led the fuel index to increase by 9.1 per cent from February to March. The index figure for March, 118.1, is the highest level that has been registered for this index since the diesel tax reduction in January 2001.
The fuel index is based on actual diesel prices on the 15th of March. From March 2002 to March 2003 the fuel index has increased by 16.5 per cent.
Increased capital costs
The index for capital costs increased by 1.3 per cent last month, as a result of the increase in real interest rates. However, in the last 12 months the capital cost index has decreased by 2.3 per cent.
The other sub-indices show little or no change in the last month.
