Longer lorry trips in 2000

The vehicle-kilometres performed increased by 1.8 per cent from 1999 to 2000. The average length of carriage per ton increased by five per cent. The transport performance has increased each year since the quarterly national lorry survey started in 1993.

The transport performance constituted 12 483.3 million ton-kilometres in 2000. This indicates an increase of 563.1 million ton-kilometres, or 4.7 per cent compared with 1999. The average distance travelled per ton was 55.4 kilometres in 2000, an increase of 8.4 kilometres since 1996.

Decrease in goods transported by small and medium-sized vehicles

The total tonnage carried in 2000 was 225 million tons. This is the same quantity as in 1999. From 1993 to 2000 the tonnage carried by special vehicles (tank lorries, tractors for semitrailers and other special vehicles) has doubled, and is now 76.6 million tons. These vehicles transported 34 per cent of the total tonnage in 2000.

During the last five years the quantity of transported gravel, sand, cement, soil, stone etc. has increased by almost 23 per cent. The total quantity of dangerous goods transported increased by 9.3 per cent from 1999 to 2000.

Vehicle-kilometres performed have shown an increase during the last three years, and this increase has been stronger for journeys carrying cargo than for journeys not carrying cargo. The number of journeys not carrying cargo has shown a decrease in this period. During the last five years the total utilisation of capacity for loaded journeys has risen by 0.5 percentage points, and is now 61.3 per cent.

Main figures for the fourth quarter 2000

The total quantity of goods transported in the fourth quarter of 2000 was 57.8 million tons. This is 3.1 million tons more than in the fourth quarter of 1999. The rate of empty kilometres was 25.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2000. This is a decrease of 1.9 percentage points since the fourth quarter of 1999. The transport performance has risen by 6.3 per cent in the same period.
