Rate of empty kilometres decreasing

The rate of empty kilometres decreased by 1.6 percentage points from the third quarter last year, and is now 26.5 per cent. The transport performance in the third quarter was 3 332 million tonne-kilometres. This is an increase of 8.2 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Lorries with a carrying capacity of 3.5 tonnes and more travelled a total of 267 million kilometres with cargo during the third quarter this year. This represents 73.5 per cent of the total kilometres travelled by these lorries. This share has been stable during the first three quarters of 2001. The average length of carriage per tonne during the third quarter has increased by 7.6 kilometres since 1999, and is now 56.2 kilometres per tonne.

The average total utilisation of capacity during the first three quarters of 2001 was 46.2 per cent. The corresponding share last year was 45.0 per cent. The utilisation of capacity in the third quarter of 2001 was 45.7 per cent, an increase of 2.3 percentage points from the same quarter last year. In the third quarter of 2001, the share of kilometres driven with cargo was 61.8 per cent.

Increase in transport performance

The total transport performance in the first three quarters of 2001 was 5.4 per cent higher than in the same period last year. Transport for hire or reward represented 82.5 per cent of the total transport performance in the third quarter, an increase of 1.1 percentage points compared with the third quarter last year.

The total amount of goods transported during the third quarter this year was 59.3 million tonnes. This is one million tonnes less than during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.7 per cent. Transport for hire or reward represented 68.8 per cent of the total amount of goods transported, a decrease of 73.5 per cent compared with the third quarter last year.
