Improved utilisation of capacity

The utilisation of capacity on trips with and without cargo has increased by 3.4 percentage points since 1993, to 46 per cent in 2001. The rate of empty kilometres decreased by 5.2 percentage points in the same period, to 26.2 per cent in 2001.

The transport performance has increased each year since 1993, and was 12 937.6 million tonne-kilometres in 2001. The total transport performance increased by 3.6 per cent or 454.3 million tonne-kilometres from the previous year. Transport for hire or reward represented 83.3 per cent of the total transport performance in 2001. This share has decreased since 1999.

Share of goods on long hauls increasing

Norwegian lorries carried 222.4 million tonnes of goods in 2001. This is 2.8 million tonnes less than in 2000, a decrease of 1.2 per cent. Since 1993 the total amount of goods transported on Norwegian lorries has increased by 26 per cent. In 2001 the movement of general goods, metal products, manufactured goods, crude industrial products etc. increased by 14.4 per cent from 2000.

The total amount of goods transported 50 kilometres or more constituted 26.2 per cent of the total amount of goods transported during 2001. This is an increase of ten per cent or 5.3 million tonnes from 1999.

Rate of empty kilometres decreasing

Lorries with a carrying capacity of 3.5 tonnes and more travelled 1 394.9 million kilometres during 2001. This is 7.9 million kilometres less than last year. During the same period, kilometres travelled with cargo increased by 7 million kilometres, and this resulted in a rate of empty kilometres of 26.2 per cent, the lowest rate recorded.

The average length of carriage per tonne has increased by 2.8 kilometres from 2000. In 2001 the average length of carriage per tonne was 58.2 kilometres.

The utilisation of capacity on trips with and without cargo has increased during the last nine years. Between 2000 and 2001 this rate increased from 45 to 46 per cent. The utilisation of capacity on trips with cargo was 61.7 per cent in 2001.

Main figures for the fourth quarter 2001

The total amount of goods transported during the fourth quarter of 2001 was 59.2 million tonnes, which is an increase of 2.4 per cent or 1.4 million tonnes from the same period last year. The total transport performance during the fourth quarter of 2001 was 3 262 tonne-kilometres, a decrease of 1.3 per cent from the same period the previous year. The utilisation of capacity corrected for volume goods on trips with cargo was 68.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2001.
