Less goods transported on Norwegian lorries

Tonnage carried on Norwegian lorries went down by 4 per cent compared with the third quarter of 2001. The total utilisation of capacity increased by 1.6 percentage points in the same period.

Tonnage carried. 3rd quarter 2000-2002. Million tonnes

The total amount of goods transported on Norwegian lorries was 54.3 million tonnes in the third quarter of 2002. The transport performance constituted 3.3 billion tonne-kilometres in the same period, an increase of 2.1 per cent compared with the third quarter of 2001.

Down 3 per cent in the first three quarters

So far in 2002 the total amount of goods transported on Norwegian lorries has been 155.8 million tonnes, a decrease of 3 per cent compared with the first three quarters of 2001.

The transport performance has increased by 1.6 per cent in the same period, from 9.3 billion tonne-kilometres in the first three quarters of 2001 to just above 9.4 billion tonne-kilometres so far this year.

Average length of carriage increasing

The average length of carriage, as kilometres driven divided by tonnage carried, is still increasing. In the third quarter this share was 60.6 kilometres compared with 57.0 kilometres last year.

This increase in average length of carriage is contributing to explaining why transport performance is increasing even though the total amount of goods transported is decreasing.

Share of transport for hire or reward up

Transport for hire or reward constituted 39.5 million tonnes or 72.1 per cent of the total tonnage carried in the third quarter of 2002. The corresponding share in the third quarter of 2001 was 70.1 per cent.

Transport for hire or reward represented 87.2 per cent of the total transport performance, which is an increase of 3.7 percentage points compared with the same period last year.

The rate of kilometres driven with cargo has decreased from 73.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2001, to 73.2 per cent in the same quarter this year.

The total utilisation of capacity was 47.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2002, an increase of 1.6 percentage points from the same quarter last year. The utilisation of capacity on trips with cargo was 64.4 per cent, and corrected for volume goods this share was 69.8 per cent.
