NOK 1.7 billion on cross border trade

Norwegians took 1.2 million day trips abroad and spent NOK 1.7 billion on cross border trade in the first quarter of 2007. This is a small increase from the same period last year. In 2006, Norwegians spent a total of NOK 8.8 billion on cross border trade.

The survey is based on information from a sample of the population, which means that there may be some uncertainty over the results. There is a 95 per cent possibility that the total cross border trade in 2006 ranged between NOK 7.9 and NOK 9.6 billion.

Cross border trade data of higher quality

During the last one and a half years, Statistics Norway has worked to improve the quality of the cross border trade figures. New, previously unpublished figures from the third quarter of 2005 to the first quarter of 2007 and revised figures from the first quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2005 have now been published.

Inaccurate question

Following the publication of the quarterly figures for cross border trade for the first quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2005, Statistics Norway was not confident that the interview objects had understood the question about expenses correctly. An extensive data analysis and rewording of the question confirmed this suspicion. A family of more than one adult travelling together had in some cases incorrectly reported all the purchased goods and services of the household instead of the goods and services paid for by the interview object.

Reworded question

Following the rewording of the question from the fourth quarter of 2006, the average expenses per trip for people who travel with others have gone down. Thus Statistics Norway is confident that the problem has been solved and has revised the figures back to the first quarter of 2004.

Revised figures

The number of trips is correct, but the average expenses per trip have been overestimated when several members of the household have travelled together.
