3.6 per cent unemployment

There were 99 000 unemployed persons in December 2013, corresponding to 3.6 per cent of the labour force. The unemployment rate has mainly varied between 3.4 and 3.6 throughout 2013.

According to seasonally-adjusted figures from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), the unemployment rate was 3.6 per cent in December (average of November-January), up 0.2 percentage points from September (average of August-October). The change is within the LFS error margin . Since the LFS showed an increase in unemployment in late 2012, the unemployment rate has only varied within the error margin.

The LFS shows an increase of 6 000 in the seasonally-adjusted number of unemployed persons from September to December, but as already mentioned this is within the error margin. In comparison, the number of people registered as unemployed or on government initiatives to promote employment with the Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) increased by 1 000 in the same period. This figure is also seasonally adjusted and based on an average of three months.

Stable employment

The LFS shows an increase in employed persons of 8 000 from September to December, adjusted for seasonal variations. This increase is within the error margin, but still in line with the development in 2013. From December 2012 to December 2013, the number of employed persons increased by 33 000. The share of employed persons corresponded to 68.7 per cent of the population in December 2013, unchanged from September the same year and from December 2012.

Unemployment down in the USA

Unemployment in the USA corresponded to 6.7 per cent of the labour force in December 2013, down 0.5 percentage points from September the same year and 1.2 percentage points from December 2012. Unemployment also decreased in the EU15 – from 11.1 per cent in September to 11.0 per cent in December. In Sweden and Denmark, unemployment was unchanged at 8.0 and 6.9 per cent respectively.
