3.5 per cent unemployment

The 95 000 unemployed persons in January corresponded to 3.5 per cent of the labour force.

The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 per cent from October 2013 (average of September-November) to January 2014 (average of December-February), according to seasonally-adjusted figures from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). This change is within the LFS error margin . Since the LFS showed an increase in unemployment in late 2012, the unemployment rate has only varied within the error margin.

Since the last release, the unemployment rate for December 2013 (average of November-January) has been adjusted from 3.6 to 3.7 per cent. These kinds of adjustments are normal since the whole time series is seasonally adjusted every month.

The LFS shows an increase of 4 000 in the seasonally-adjusted number of unemployed persons from October 2013 to January 2014, but as already mentioned, this is within the error margin. In comparison, the number of people registered as unemployed or on government initiatives to promote employment with the Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) increased by 1 000 in the same period. This figure is also seasonally adjusted and based on a three-month average.

Stable employment

The LFS shows an increase in employed persons of 6 000 from October 2013 to January 2014, adjusted for seasonal variations. This increase is within the error margin, but still in line with the development last year. From January 2013 to January 2014, the number of employed persons increased by 39 000. The share of employed persons corresponded to 68.7 per cent of the population in January 2014, down 0.1 percentage point from October 2013 and up 0.1 percentage point from January 2013.

Unemployment down in the USA

Unemployment in the USA corresponded to 6.6 per cent of the labour force in January 2014, down 0.6 percentage points from October 2013. Unemployment in the EU15 remained at 11.0 per cent in the same period. In Sweden, unemployment increased from 7.9 per cent in October 2013 to 8.2 per cent in January 2014. Denmark had an increase in unemployment by 0.1 percentage point in this period, to 7.0 per cent in January.
