Slight increase in paid wages and remuneration

Total paid compensation in cash amounted to NOK 619.4 billion in 2004. This is an increase of NOK 16.6 billion or 2.8 per cent from 2003.

2 604 046 persons received wages and remuneration in 2004, which is 10 500 less than in 2003. For all persons that received paid wages and remuneration, the average was NOK 238 000 in 2004 - an increase of 3.2 per cent from 2003.

Disbursements of unemployment benefits decreased by 0.2 per cent

188 200 persons received unemployment benefit in 2004, a decrease of 15.6 per cent from the year before. Total disbursements of unemployment benefit amounted to nearly NOK 11 billion in 2004, a decrease of 0.2 per cent from 2003.

Sick and maternity leave benefits decreased by 5.3 per cent

Total paid benefits for sick and maternity leave amounted to NOK 14.2 billion in 2004. This is a decrease of approximately NOK 800 million or 5.3 per cent from 2003. In comparison the increase from 2002 to 2003 came to 9.7 per cent.

About 322 300 persons received sick leave or maternity leave benefits in 2004. These benefits exclusively cover disbursements through the national social security system, and do not cover benefits paid by government employers or payments to the self- employed. Disbursements of maternity and sick leave benefits to Central or Local government employees are incorporated in the total paid wages and remuneration.

Increase in payments of pensions

The total payments of pensions were NOK 186.9 billion in 2004, an increase of 6.5 per cent compared with 2003. This amount includes payments from the national social security system and different pension payments outside the national social security system. 1 471 800 persons received such payments in 2004, and this is an increase of 1 800 persons since 2003.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on figures from the register on End of the Year Certificates for the year 2003 updated by 7 March. This covers enterprises that are obligated by law to report to the register.
