Turnover increased by 21 per cent in 2007
From 2006 to 2007, the local kind-of-activity units in the construction industry increased turnover by NOK 49 billion, or 21.1 per cent.
The local kind-of-activity units (KAUs) in construction had a total turnover of NOK 282.4 billion.
The construction industry is divided into several industry classes. The largest subclass is "General construction of buildings". The local KAUs in this industry class had a total turnover of NOK 115.4 billion and employed 56 560 persons in 2007; an increase of 21 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively from 2006. In 2007, this industry class accounted for almost 41 per cent of the total turnover in construction.
Almost 173 000 employees in construction
The local KAUs in the construction industry employed 172 797 persons in 2007; an increase of 9.5 per cent from 2006.
In 2007, as many as 75.7 per cent of the local kind-of activity units (KAUs) in construction had two employees or fewer, but these only contributed to 11 per cent of the turnover. The local KAUs with 30 or more employees only account for 2.1 per cent of the total population, but contributed with 46 per cent of the total construction turnover in 2007.
Statistics on enterprise level
The structural business statistics for construction are compiled both on local KAU level and on enterprise level. The figures on enterprise level may differ from figures on local KAU level. This is due to some enterprises being registered in one industry group according to main activity, while at the same time consisting of local KAUs in other groups.
On enterprise level, the turnover increased by 21.2 per cent to NOK 283.9 billion. Total employment was 172 787 persons in 2007.

Revision of industriesIn 2007, the enterprises in Statistics Norway's Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises were coded in accordance with the new Standard Industrial Classification (SN2007). The new Standard Industrial Classification (SN2007) will be used for the first time in the publishing of preliminary figures for the statistical year of 2008, in October 2009. Building project developments (housing cooperatives and the development and sale of property) have been included in the building and construction activity. Industries were also broken down in order to make a clearer distinction between the building activity and construction activity.
