Small increase in petroleum production
The total petroleum production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in the first nine months of 2009 amounted to 177.4 million Sm3 oil equivalents (oe). Compared to the same period in 2008, this is a small increase of 0.4 per cent.
The total production of oil amounted to 85.9 million Sm3 oe in the first nine months of 2009; a decrease by 5.3 per cent or 4.8 million Sm3 oe. There are 59 fields that produce oil, six more than for the same period last year. The largest oil producing field is Ekofisk, whose production started in 1971, and which produced 8.4 million Sm3 oe in the fist nine months of 2009.
Gas production
The production of natural gas had an increase in the first nine months of 2009. Production ended at 76.2 million Sm3 oe; an increase of 7.3 per cent or 5.2 million Sm3 compared with the same period in 2008. Natural gas production made up 42.9 per cent of the total petroleum production.
