Decreased production of petroleum

The production of gas and oil (including condensate and NGL) ended at 64 Sm3 million oil equivalent (o.e.) in the first three months this year. This equals a decrease by 2.8 per cent or 1.8 million Sm3 o.e. compared to the same period in 2009. The production of gas increased, while the production of oil decreased.

The Norwegian oil production peaked in 2000, in the following years the production have declined. In the first three months of 2010 the oil production ended at 28 million Sm3 , 3 million Sm3 or 8.8 per cent less then in the same period in 2009. There where 57 fields that produced oil in the fist quarter, one more then last year. In spite of the increased number of producing oil fields on the Norwegian continental shelf, the oil production has decreased.

Increased gas production

In the three first months of 2010 the gas production ended right beneath 31 million Sm3 o.e. This is about 1 million Sm3 o.e or 3.5 per cent more than the fist three months last year. This is the fist time that the production of gas is over 30 million Sm3 o.e for one single quarter. If we compare the gas and oil production (including condensate and NGL), the gas production is only 3 Sm3 o.e less than the oil production. According to calculations made by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate the gas production will exceed the oil production during next year. In the fist quarter this year, the production of gas equalled 48 per cent of the total petroleum production.
