The Consequences of Non-Standard Employment: the case of Norway

NSE contracts, such as fixed-term contracts, on-call contracts and temporary-agency contracts, are a focal point of economic and political debate in Europe. Despite the importance of NSE, research provides us scattered and inadequate knowledge on how NSE shapes the careers of individual workers and on which factors determine the positive or negative outcomes of NSE in the career.

This project will study the employment trajectories and investigate within an integral life course framework. We will focus on two related fields: a substantially-oriented research on the workers careers in Norway and a methodologically-oriented research on the effect of measurement error on studying non-standard employment.

We will pursue three research questions.

This project will study how firm practices with respect to the use of flexible employment contracts affect the later career of workers.
The second research question concerns the effect of NSE on the transition of older workers to retirement.
In addition, this project will study the extent to which measurement error in survey and register data results in misclassification regarding employment contracts and mobility between different types of contracts within different periods of time.
