The purpose of the ECONOR projects is to provide updated overviews of economic and socio-economic conditions of the circumpolar Arctic, in a context of climate change and environmental impacts.
Climate change and global economic development have large impacts on nature-based livelihoods of Arctic Indigenous Peoples and other Arctic residents. Economic activity, income, and socio-economic indicators are seen in the context of natural resource extraction and land use change in the Arctic. There has been a lack of harmonized statistics on economic activity in the Arctic, at a circumpolar and regional level. Continued strengthened cooperation between statistical agencies of Arctic countries and regions is necessary.
The ECONOR projects are funded by Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nordic Council of Ministers, with co-funding from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs of Canada and cooperating partners. Statistics Norway, in cooperation with CICERO Center for Climate Research and the ECONOR network with representatives from national statistical offices and research organizations across the Arctic, have carried out the ECONOR projects.
The ECONOR projects are carried out in close cooperation with Arctic Council’s Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG). Participants in ECONOR V are statisticians and researchers from the circumpolar ECONOR network, contributing with data, analysis, and text. The editorial group is based in Statistics Norway, in close cooperation with CICERO and Université Laval.
