Family income increase the most in Oslo

Married couples with children and cohabiting couples with common children residing in Oslo and Akershus had a better income growth in the 1990s than their counterparts in other counties.

Between 1993 and 1999, the average after-tax income measured at constant prices for families with children residing in Oslo and Akershus increased by 25 and 26 per cent respectively. The same figure for the whole country was 21 per cent. The couples with children in Troms and Finnmark had the weakest income growth of 15 and 11 per cent respectively.

It is also among the families with children in Oslo and Akershus that we find the highest average income. Families with children in Oslo had the highest income. Married couples with children and cohabiting couples with common children in this county had an average after-tax income of NOK 535 000 in 1999. This was almost NOK 74 000 higher than the national average and around NOK 127 000 more than the families with children in Nord-Trondelag had, which is the county with lowest average income.

Many with high income in Oslo...

36 per cent of the couples with children in Oslo had an after-tax income that was higher than NOK 500 000 in 1999. This percentage was even higher among couples with children residing in Akershus where 4 out of 10 had such a high income. Compared to that, only 17 per cent of couples with children in Nord-Trondelag had so high income.

... but also many with low income

However, there were also in Oslo relatively many families with children who had low income. Approximately 5 per cent of all couples with children in Oslo had an after-tax income that was lower than NOK 200 000. In comparison to that only 1 per cent of the couples with children in Sogn og Fjordane, which was the county with the fewest with low income, were in the same situation. For the whole country, only 2 per cent of couples with children had an after-tax income of less than NOK 200 000 in 1999.

Most of families, nevertheless, had a considerably higher income than this. 6 out of 10 couples with children had an average after-tax income of between NOK 300 000 and 500 000.
