Reason for immigration: The reason for the first immigration, according to the information registered in the registers of the immigration authorities and otherwise as it is possible to derive from various relevant register variables. Unknown reason for immigration: Immigrants from the Nordic countries and immigrants that was resident in Norway before 1990 do not have registered a reason for immigration. Immigrants where the reason for immigration is either unknown or other, are combined into one group. The majority in the group are immigrant where the reason for immigration is unknown. To see the two variables separate, see the stat bank table 'Reason for immigration for employed immigrants, by years of residence in Norway and sex'. We lack information about occupations for self-employed persons. Because of errors in the reporting, Statistics Norway also lacks information about occupation for some employments. In addition, it was voluntary for employers to report occupational codes in the a-scheme for the group of freelancers, contractors, and fee persons from 2015 to March 2019. From April 2019, occupational codes were also mandatory for this group. The latter contributes to a large decline in the number of unknown occupations between 2018 and 2019. The number of non-Nordic citizens with unknown reason for immigration has increased significantly in 2022. The main reason is the lack of registration of the reason for immigration for EEA citizens.
