Goods transported on Norwegian lorries decreasing

Tonnage carried on Norwegian lorries went down by 7 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2001. The transport performance increased by 0.8 per cent during the same period.

Tonnage carried. 1st quarter 1995 - 2002. Million tonnes

During the first quarter of 2002 the total amount of goods transported on Norwegian lorries was 46.6 tonnes, while the transport performance constituted 2.9 billion tonne-kilometres.

Share of transport for hire or reward up

Transport for hire or reward constituted 34.1 million tonnes or 73 per cent of the total tonnage carried in the first quarter of 2002. The corresponding share was 69 per cent in the first quarter last year. Transport for hire or reward represented 86.4 per cent of the total transport performance, which is an increase of 1.9 percentage points from the corresponding period last year.

Norwegian lorries travelled a total of 305.2 million kilometres domestically during the first quarter 2002, two million kilometres or 0.7 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter last year. The rate of kilometres driven with cargo has increased from 73.7 per cent in the first quarter 2001, to 76.3 per cent in the same quarter this year.

Transport performance. 1st quarter 1998 - 2002. Million tonne-kilometres

The total utilisation of capacity was 46.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2002. This is a decrease of 1.1 percentage points from the same quarter last year. The utilisation of capacity on trips with cargo was 60.4 per cent, and corrected for volume goods this share was 65.5 per cent.

Average length of carriage increasing

The average length of carriage, as kilometres driven divided by tonnage carried, is still increasing. During the first quarter this share was 62.2 kilometres compared with 57.2 kilometres last year. The increase in the average length of carriage is explaining why the transport performance is increasing even if the amount of goods transported is decreasing.

Figures from 1999 - 2001 have been revised to incorporate the improvements in the programs for estimating totals
