In 2003 the number of local kind-of-activity units (KAUs) in the hotel and restaurant industry division amounted to 11 337. They had a total turnover of NOK 42 billion. The turnover increased by 1 per cent from NOK 41.6 billion from 2002.

In the same period the employment decreased by about 1 800 persons to 87 600 - a decrease of 2 per cent. The local KAUs almost paid NOK 14.4 billion in wages in 2003.

Restaurants had the highest turnover

At the local KAU level the restaurants - i.e. restaurants, cafes, snack bars, and the like - constituted about 47 per cent of the total turnover in the industry division. In 2003 the restaurants had a turnover of NOK 19.9 billion. This is an increase by NOK 200 million since 2002. Compared with 2001 the turnover has increased by NOK 1.5 billion. In the same period the employment increased by 5 per cent.

Decrease in value added

Despite the growth in turnover for the local KAUs the value added decreased by almost NOK 100 million to NOK 17 billion in 2003 because the operating cost grew more rapidly than the operating income.

Higher spending in Oslo and Hordaland

Of the 42 billion turnover in the industry division the hotels and restaurants in Oslo and Hordaland constituted 13.2. In other words, nearly NOK one out of three were spent on hotel and restaurant services in these two counties, whereas only one out of four local KAUs was situated here.

The enterprises in the industry division

The total turnover for the enterprises came to almost NOK 40.8 billion in 2003. This is an increase of NOK 250 million. The employment decreased by 2 per cent to 85 200.

Local KAUs and enterprises

The figures on the enterprises level may differ from those on local KAU level. This is due to some enterprises being registered after main activity in one industry subclass, but may also consist of local KAUs in other subgroups.
