24 fatalities in January
559 accidents were reported to the police in the first month of the year, according to preliminary figures. 24 people were killed and 800 injured in these accidents. 68 were severely injured.
The corresponding figures for January 2007 were 598 accidents, in which 23 people were killed and 908 were injured. 62 of these were severely injured. The average for January in the last ten years is 22 fatalities and 857 injured.
Males overrepresented
19 men and five women were killed on Norwegian roads last month. Half of these were under 35 years of age, and eight were men aged 20-34.
Head-on collisions and run-off-road crashes still dominate
Approximately 50 per cent of the accidents in January were head-on collisions and run-off-road crashes. Eleven of the 24 people who were killed and 213 of the 800 who were injured, were involved in head-on collisions. The corresponding figure for run-off-road crashes were six killed and 213 injured.
Police figures
The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 25 per cent of the casualties reported in January 2008 belonged to this category, compared to 23 in the preliminary report published in January 2007. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.
New classification of injuryFrom January 2008 Statistics Norway will implement a new classification of injury. The previously used terms “very seriously injured” and “seriously injured” will be grouped together under the blanket term “severely injured”. |
