More qualified pre school teachers

About 88 per cent of the directors and educational leaders had an approved pre-school teacher education by the end of 2001, 2 percentage points more than in 2000. For all employees, the percentage was 32,, 1 point more than in 2000. Most of the employees were women; only 7 per cent were men.

A total of 192 600 children aged 0-6 had a place in kindergarten by the end of 2001, an increase of 2 800 or just over 1 per cent compared with 2000. Of the 192 600, 5 800 were in open kindergarten programmes. A total of 195 500 children were in a kindergarten programme. Children in so-called open kindergartens are not included.

Just over 77 200 children, or 40 per cent, were in a private kindergarten while 115 400 had a place in a public kindergarten.
