Continuing decrease in distance teaching
Independent distance teaching institutions had a seven per cent decrease in number of course completions from 2009 to 2010.
The total number of course completions in 2010 was 17 100; a decrease of 7 per cent in 2010 compared to the previous year. This was less than half of course completions in the year 2000. The number of completions in courses with the option of public examination decreased from 28 400 in 2000 to 7 700 in 2010. The number of completions in courses with the option of internal examination increased from 6 000 in 2000 to 9 200 in 2010.
Women in majority and social sciences still most popular
In 2010, women accounted for 58 per cent of all completed courses and men for 42 per cent. Social sciences had by far the most course completions; 4 600 or 27 per cent of all completions. Social sciences were again the most popular among women, with 33 per cent of all course completions taken by women in 2010, while transport and communication was again the most popular among men, with 34 per cent of all course completions taken by men in 2010.
